Lomboy is the traditional leaf used for smoking tobacco cigarettes in central and southern Philippines. It comes from the lomboy (or duhat in Tagalog) tree known for its tiny violet, tart fruits. Bisayans dry the leaves & roll tobacco inside.

I first heard about lomboy through Kalami Spirit Arts, I’ve begun to use them ceremonially for offerings in my spiritual practice, as well as for pamasahe to the spirits on new journeys, and they are my preferred way of smoking now.
The taste is lightly sweet on its own and the pull and taste of the tobacco itself is strong, but I’ve also learned to roll non tobacco herbal blends with lomboy by a lightly wetting the leaf for pliability, and adding a bio degradable filter for non tobacco herbs to hold them in place.
The ones that Khokhoi sells seemed prepared and packaged with a deal of care, which I take to be an hint to expected quality of ingredients when sourcing from sellers in Visayas. I try to keep some on hand at all times now, and I think buying from Kalami is a great way to connect to source, especially in the diaspora if you don’t already own a Duhat Tree
